What to do if your oven drawer is stuck
The storage or warming drawer is typically located at the bottom of your range. This oven drawer can be a great place to store oven-safe cooking and baking items, freeing up cabinet space in your kitchen. However, it’s not so convenient if the drawer won’t open. This guide can show you how to open a stuck bottom oven drawer and offers steps in taking your oven drawer out and putting it back into place.
Why is the bottom drawer of your oven jammed?
If you use your bottom drawer for storing oven-safe items like a muffin tin, baking sheet, cast-iron pan or other metal cookware, it may be that one of these items is causing the drawer to jam. If the bottom drawer has come off the rail and is misaligned with the track, this could also cause the drawer to jam.
How to open an oven drawer that’s stuck
For a drawer that has fallen off the rail, check your oven owner’s manual for instructions on how to align it back on the track. The following steps offer solutions if your bottom oven drawer is jammed and you’re not sure how to open it. You can also learn more about the parts of an oven.
Tools
Thin wooden spoon, spatula or yardstick (optional)
Step 1: Jiggle the drawer
With the oven cool, firmly grasp the oven drawer handle and gently jiggle or shake it to see if this can dislodge the item that’s blocking it from opening. You may also need to push and pull the drawer in and out to see if that helps. Simply settling the items to the bottom of the drawer may be enough for you to open it.
Step 2: Use a long, thin tool to loosen the item
You can also try to insert a thin spatula, wooden spoon or yardstick into the gap above the drawer. Slide it from side to side and wiggle it back and forth to see if you can find what’s blocking the drawer. If you bump into the item, push it down and pull the drawer open.
How do you remove the bottom drawer from an oven?
Your bottom drawer should fully extend for easy cleaning. You can also remove the drawer if you want to realign it along the rails or need to replace it. It’s best to consult your oven owner’s manual for detailed instructions on how to remove it. You can follow these steps for general guidelines.
Step 1: Make sure the drawer is cool and empty.
Step 2: Pull the storage drawer out until it reaches the drawer stop.
Step 3: Gently lift the drawer up and pull it out.
Select models have a warming drawer that may require the use of a screwdriver to remove it.
Step 1: Make sure the drawer is cool and empty.
Step 2: Pull the warming drawer out until it’s fully open.
Step 3: Loosen the drawer from its glide alignment notch using a flat-blade screwdriver.
Step 4: Gently lift the drawer alignment tab from the glide.
Step 5: Repeat step 4 on the other side to detach it from the glide, then slide your drawer out to remove it.
How do you put an oven drawer back in?
To replace your bottom drawer or realign it back onto the rails, first check your owner’s manual for instructions. The following general steps can help you put your oven drawer back in.
Keep in mind that when your bottom drawer is properly installed, the rear slides on the bottom will engage the base rails and the drawer should not tip when oven-safe cookware is stored in it.
Step 1: Using both hands, lift the front of the drawer and place the rear down on the rail. The drawer stop notch should be behind the drawer glide.
Step 2: Lower the drawer onto the drawer glide.
Step 3: Slowly push the drawer into the oven, making sure that it glides properly.
Here are the instructions for select models that have a warming drawer.
Step 1: Align the warming drawer notches with drawer glides on both sides and place the rear alignment tabs into the drawer glides.
Step 2: Glide the drawer in until it closes.
Step 3: Open and close the drawer to ensure it’s aligned on the glides.
