Portable vs. built-in dishwashers: which is better?

Both a portable and built-in dishwasher can help make cleanup easier after mealtime; however, they’re different types of dishwashers. A portable model has wheels and is mobile, while a built-in dishwasher is installed in a designated spot underneath your kitchen countertop. This guide can show you the key differences and benefits of both models to help you decide which is a better option for you and your family.

What are the differences between portable and built-in dishwashers?

In general, a portable dishwasher works like a built-in dishwasher, but there are some things to consider before deciding what’s best for your mealtime routine and kitchen layout. Read on to learn more about the key differences between these types of dishwasher models.

1. Installation

The main difference is that a built-in dishwasher is installed under your kitchen countertop and connects to your home’s plumbing, while a portable dishwasher moves on wheels and connects a hose adapter to your kitchen faucet to draw the water from your sink. Once a dishwasher cycle is complete, you can simply move a portable dishwasher from the sink to a convenient area in your kitchen.

2. Size

Both built-in and portable dishwashers are available in the standard dishwasher size of 24 inches wide. You can also find compact options that are 18 inches wide, making them a good option for smaller homes, trailers or RVs. If you’re looking for an oversized dishwasher, you’ll find more built-in options to choose from.

3. Capacity

The capacity of a dishwasher is determined by how many place settings a dishwasher can hold. One place setting includes a large and small plate, a bowl, a coffee cup and saucer, a glass and utensils. Most portable and built-in standard-sized models can wash between 10 and 12 place settings. An 18-inch compact dishwasher can generally handle up to 8 place settings.

Built-in dishwashers also come in oversized models such as a tall tub dishwasher with a larger capacity to clean at least 14 place settings and select Whirlpool® 3rd Rack Dishwashers that can fit extra mugs and bowls.

4. Water usage

Both portable and built-in dishwasher models use almost the same amount of water, with a standard-sized dishwasher using around 4.2 gallons of water per cycle and a compact dishwasher drawing around 3.5 gallons per cycle.

5. Noise level

A built-in dishwasher with insulating padding around the appliance tends to be quieter than a portable dishwasher. Learn more about decibels and how the noise level of a dishwasher is measured.

What are the benefits of portable vs. built-in dishwashers?

The following are the benefits of both portable and standard-sized built-in dishwashers to help you determine the right fit for your kitchen.

A Whirlpool® portable dishwasher.

Portable dishwasher:

  • The convenience of a standalone appliance that offers additional countertop space for smaller kitchens without sacrificing functionality.
  • It connects to your kitchen sink faucet, so there’s no need for installation and plumbing connection.
  • It’s a great option for renters because a portable dishwasher can move with you into your next home.
  • Portable dishwashers may be priced lower than some built-in models, depending on model and features.

A Whirlpool® built-in dishwasher.

Built-in dishwasher:

  • It’s installed into your home’s plumbing so you can use your kitchen sink and run your dishwasher at the same time. There’s also no need to move the appliance back and forth to use it.

  • It takes up no counter space and can integrate seamlessly with your kitchen design.

  • It usually has more features, such as specialized washing and drying settings, larger capacities and sometimes even a third rack.

  • Ideal for bigger families or if you entertain often.

Can you run a portable dishwasher overnight?

It’s not recommended to run your portable dishwasher overnight. It can have a higher noise level than a built-in dishwasher, and you may want to disconnect the hose from your kitchen faucet following a wash and dry cycle in case of water leaks. Consult your dishwasher’s user manual for more information.

Are all built-in dishwashers the same size?

Built-in dishwashers can be found in three size categories with the standard size being the most common. Keep in mind that larger dishwasher dimensions may not mean that they have more capacity.

  • Standard built-in dishwasher dimensions: 24 inches wide, 35 inches tall and 24 inches deep

  • Oversized built-in dishwasher dimensions: 30 to 42 inches wide, 35 inches tall and 24 inches deep

  • Small space or compact built-in dishwasher dimensions: 18 inches wide, 35 inches tall and 24 inches deep

What are some important features to consider when buying a dishwasher?

Once you decide on the size, capacity, noise level, color and type of dishwasher that’s a good option for your kitchen, consider other features such as wash and dry cycles.
