A Whirlpool® range with dimensions

Stove dimensions: standard range sizes & measurements

The right balance of cooking, counter and storage space is essential to a smooth functioning kitchen. And the stove is where most of the action happens. You’ll need to choose between different range types, widths and element or burner configurations to find the ideal stove for your kitchen. Utilize this comprehensive guide to learn about standard the dimensions of stoves and to determine the measurements for your perfect stove fit.

Keep in mind that the terms “stove” and “range” are used interchangeably throughout this article, since both terms are common when referring to this classic kitchen appliance.

What are standard stove dimensions?

The most “standard” range size is about 30 inches wide, 27-29 inches deep and 36 inches tall. Keep in mind these measurements do not include the backguard, handles, knobs or grates. The second most “standard” stove size is 36 inches wide, so consider this if you want an extra burner or element.

Stove sizes fluctuate more in width than in depth or height, since most countertop and cabinet dimensions are standardized. The goal is for your range to fit mostly flush with the top of your countertops and the front of your cabinets, with the door only sticking out an inch or two beyond the cabinets.

What are the different sizes of stoves?

Stove sizes run from compact, to standard and extra-wide sizes. Stove widths run from 20-24 inches for compact, 30-36 inches for standard and 48-60 inches for extra-wide models. Depths stay around 25-27 inches and heights around 36-41 inches, with some compact models making up for width with height.

For the most part, these stove measurements apply to gas, electric, freestanding and slide-in ranges. The extra-wide sized models tend to be commercial-inspired, which means they mostly come in gas, slide-in styles. Learn about the differences between gas and electric ranges.

How are stoves measured?

Stoves are measured in several different ways. Look for these in shopping specifications:

  • Dimensions measured without the door, handles, knobs, grates or a backguard. These are the measurements that should align with cabinets and countertops.

  • Dimensions with the door closed and open so you can make sure you have adequate clearance.

  • Dimensions that include handles, knobs, grates or a backguard.

  • Cutout dimensions—these are useful when you’re shopping, because you can just measure your cutout and select a range based on those dimensions.

Keep in mind that listed measurements may be rounded up slightly. For instance, a 30-inch wide range is usually more like 29-7/8 inches.

How to measure for a new kitchen range

If you’re shopping for a new kitchen range, and want to ensure an ideal fit, it’s important to measure your range cutout first.

Step 1: Remove your current range

Unplug your appliance and carefully remove it to get your measurements as accurate as possible. Get help disposing of your appliance with this guide to removing and recycling appliances.

Step 2: Measure the cutout width

Use a measuring tape to measure the width of the cutout from cabinet to cabinet. If your countertops extend past the cabinets into the cutout, measure that width as well, since it could affect installation. Measure the back of the cabinets and the front to make sure they match. If not, go with the smaller dimension. A standard cutout width is usually 30 inches wide to accommodate a 30-inch range that is 29-7/8 inches wide.

Step 3: Measure the cutout depth

Use a measuring tape to measure the depth of the cutout from the wall to the front of the cabinet, excluding the door. A typical wall cabinet is 24 inches deep to work with standard range depths of around 25 to 27 inches. This means your range will stick out slightly beyond your cabinets, which is typical. Most of this extra depth will be the closed oven door.

Step 4: Measure the cutout height

Use a measuring tape to measure the height of the cutout from the floor to the top of countertops. Take one measurement toward the back of the opening and one toward the front to account for an unlevel floor. If you find that it is unlevel, most ranges have adjustable legs to level the range. A typical cutout height is 36 inches to align with a standard stove height.

Step 5: Map out the stove’s path

Figure out the best path of entry to your desired installation location, beginning at your home entrance and taking into account each hall and doorway. Then measure the width of those spaces to ensure the unit will make it through.
