A load of clothes in a Whirlpool® dryer

Washers and dryers for apartments and small spaces

Keeping up with laundry can feel like even more of a chore in small spaces like apartments, condos and RVs — and it’s not just because there’s less room to let dirty clothes pile up. If you’re tired of lugging baskets to the laundromat or a shared basement laundry room, consider a compact washer and dryer set that makes the most of every inch. Check out Whirlpool brand’s favorite solutions for common constraints.

What size is a small washer and dryer?

A standard compact washer and dryer is typically the smallest size, each with a width of 24 inches, height of 33 to 36 inches and depth of 24 to 26 inches. For side-by-side placement, you’ll need a space that’s approximately 48 inches wide, 34 inches tall and 25 inches deep.

A compact stackable washer and dryer takes up less floor space and is usually 24 inches wide, 66 to 72 inches tall and 24 to 26 inches deep. Compact models typically have a capacity of 1.5–3.4 cubic feet which can be ideal when you have limited space or a smaller household that doesn’t create much laundry. What size is an apartment washer and dryer?

A compact washer and dryer works well in an apartment. You can choose a stackable model which is around 24 inches wide, 66 to 72 inches tall and 24 to 26 inches deep or a compact side-by-side portable washer and dryer that measures approximately 48 inches wide, 34 inches tall and 25 inches deep.

A portable washer with flexible installation rolls on casters and connects a fill-and-drain hose to your sink or you can install it with standard plumbing. A portable dryer uses a standard 120V electrical connection and can also roll on casters or be permanently installed into place.

What size is an RV washer and dryer?

A ventless all-in-one washer dryer is a convenient option for an RV as these models can range between 23 to 27 inches wide, 33 to 39 inches tall and 22 to 30 inches deep, with storage capacity between two to four cu. ft. You can install them in small spaces with electrical power and a water hookup.

What types of washers and dryers are ideal for limited space?

An ideal solution for smaller homes is a space saving washer and dryer, such as a portable model with flexible installation. If you have less floor space, consider small stackable washers and dryers. An all-in-one washer is another option as it does both the washing and drying in one machine.

1. Compact washers and dryers for kitchens and narrow areas

Compact washers and dryers take up less room than traditional models, which makes them a great space-saving solution for smaller homes. Their narrow width, typically 24 inches, allows you to tuck them away into your kitchen and other narrow areas.

An undercounter compact set can slide under your kitchen counter, a closet-depth model can be hidden away, or a stackable unit can fit nicely into a vertical space. For multi-use areas, choose a portable top load washer that can be hooked up to a sink just when you need it. Have a permanent location in mind? It can also be installed with standard plumbing.

2. Small stackable washers and dryers for closets and vertical spaces

When floor space is limited, go vertical with stackable washers and dryers. Choose to stack a front load pair or opt for the solution of a stacked top load washer dryer combo.

Both options offer enough capacity for day-to-day loads, so the choice comes down to your preferred style. If you’re in an apartment or condo where venting can be a challenge, consider a stacked laundry center with long vent design to get great drying performance with additional installation flexibility.
